Catherine “Tat” Guscio carries on folk traditions.

“I like things with a story,” muses the Bluffton native of the Lowcountry vignettes that she paints on washtubs, silks and canvases. In her scenes of fishermen and their families, she seeks to preserve the quiet history of life on the marsh. “My work hearkens back to a time before development, when things were simpler.” In addition to coastal working life and local flora like indigo and black-eyed Susans, Tat has long been fascinated by Chinese culture, whose influences can be seen in her jewelry (www.tatsenuf.com) and on the wall of her parents’ historic district craft store. “Yes, my mother actually encouraged me to draw on the walls when I was little,” she laughs. Self-taught as an artist and jeweler, Tat has recently ramped up her artistic skill set by attending workshops on enameling and chainmaking. “I just try everything and see what works.”
