Jessica Leigh Lebos
When Jessica Leigh graduated with a degree in creative writing, she figured she'd be slinging lattes for the rest of her life, so she shaved her head, moved into a VW bus and set off for Alaska. Good thing the van broke down just north of San Francisco, because she just hates cold weather. Her baris...

skirt! Founder on the Telly Tomorrow

Tuesday, May, 6, 2008

I haven’t watched much daytime television since Patch and Kayla broke up the first time (that’s a couple of decades ago for those of you who didn't watch Days of Our Lives on your best friend’s Betamax every day while doing your algebra homework your freshman year of high school) but since being laid up with a bum hip since Friday, I’m catching up.

Because I do not have cable (not revolutionary, just cheap), I’ve been stuck with three networks plus PBS (and I’ve already seen every episode of Dragon Tales.) I’ve found I cannot stomach Regis and Kelly (though I’m seriously coveting the shiny magical kitchen appliances Ripa’s been shilling for) and though I completely love Whoopi and Barbara, The View’s Elizabeth Hassleback makes me feel like I have a wedgie.

I have found one gem during my remote control marathon that didn’t blind me with the shine of fake veneers or insult my (admittedly Endocet-addled) intelligence: Daytime, which airs around the Southeast, achieves a nice balance of  local content, interesting interviews and unoffensive hosting, plus a mouthwatering cooking segment (Chef Yvan’s Cinco de Mayo Ceviche -mmm). Just what this couchbound patient needed.

You know they’re a smart crew over there in Tampa because they’re interviewing skirt! founder Nikki Hardin tomorrow (that’s Wednesday, May 7). She’ll be discussing the herstory of the magazine and I’m sure Cyndi and Dave will have some good questions for her. The interview will air during some time between noon and 1pm on WSAV.

So, you know, set your TiVo. Or your Betamax, as it were.

Oh, and btw, Patch and Kayla – played by the same actors 20+ years later - are still going strong. Isn’t is nice how some things never change?

Kelly Ripa is the one that gives me that "wedgie" feeling. I don't know if this will drive anyone nuts, but I'm dying to see Kathie Lee come back to the Reeg. Am I wrong? I miss her!

Or has he had lasik on that eye by now? In a former life (as a lowly assistant at an NBC affiliate), it was my lot to escort Patch and the winner of a "Date with Patch" contest to dinner. I think the winner was a bit bummed to see me along for the ride--almost as bummed as I was. Sorry you're laid up but glad to find out that Stephen Nichols still has his job.

OMG, Jenny, can I cut off a lock of your hair to send it to my best friend Amy from high school? She will put it a locket and wear it forever. He still has the patch, yes. Funny, I don't even remember how he lost the damn eye, anyway. I bet Amy knows. Something about Stockholm, maybe? ~Jessica Leigh

OK, first off, I'm SO jealous of the reader who got to tag along on a "dream date" with Patch back in the day... he was such a babe! Lol! Actually, my cousin-in-law worked on the DOOL writing staff until recently, when she had her daughter. "Patch" was the only cast member who actually showed up at the hospital to see the new baby -- although I heard the whole cast sent gifts, flowers, etc., which is sweet. According to my cousin-in-law, Stephen Nichols is a very nice, down-to-earth guy. But back to the drama... Patch lost his eye in a knife fight with Bo while they were both in the Merchant Marines. Afterward, they became best buddies and got matching tattoos. Awww... -- Amy (Jessica's friend)

and since you're a fan, you'll be glad to know he was very gracious to our contest winner, though I don't know if it counts as a "dream date" since we had to fit the date in between appearances at a car show. Ah the glamour of it all. Thank you for the patch backstory. Heartening in some way I suppose, that Patch has not made a miraculous recovery after all of these years.

Hi there, this is my 1st ever blog-just thought I'd share. Is there anyway to post a video of the african dance? I would really like to see Jessica Leigh twirl her skirt. I took a jazz class with her once in the 9th grade and can attest she can move. I have fond memories of eating chips, watching "days" and doing Math homework at Amy's house. I of course wasn't doing the advanced "alegbra" like jess-i was in pre-algebra b/c I wasn't as smart. In fact, I confess at work we get "soap opera" digest and I've flipped through it to ensure Bo & Hope are still alive and well. It's nice to know that some things never change. Please advise if there is any link to the dancing. I once memorized the dance from both "thriller" and "lucky star" videos so I may be able to pick up a few moves from watching!
