she`s so skirt!she`s so skirt!

Jan Blackshire | Naturalist

Jan traversed this land from the redwood forests to the Gulfstream waters during her ten-year stint as a park ranger, and her personal adventures have taken her from the bottom of the Grand Canyon to the top of Mount Whitney.

“I still plan to travel the world,” explains the former National Guard sergeant. “But you can’t be a good representative of your own country if you haven’t seen it.”

She came to the South to earn a Master’s from SCAD and has settled down - for now - as the director of the historic Ogeechee Canal and Nature Center off Highway 204, home to myriad species of butterflies, birds and mammals and one of the only open spaces around that welcomes dogs.

“I’ve been all over this country and I’ve seen more diversity, history and wildlife in this half-mile stretch than anywhere.”

She admits to being deathly afraid of spiders.
