Torkwase Karame is down to earth.

The West African Earth Mother goddess is known as Asase Ya, and it is her attitude of limitless love that inspires this Effingham native. "We need to be there for the kids of this generation and teach them about their ancestors. We have to raise them with a sense of service to the community and the world." A volunteer with Citizens for Environmental Justice, she led a retreat for urban-raised youth, and traveled to South Africa and Senegal as a delegate to the United Nations. "People need to realize what an opportunity we have to live first class, and the more we have, the more we have to give back to the community." A self-described "domestic goddess," the mother of two maintains a panoply of part-time jobs, but it is her morning paper route that feeds her soul. "I use it as meditation time. I deliver near the Savannah River, and it's just beautiful at that hour. I got see to my first shooting star!"
