When Jessica Leigh graduated with a degree in creative writing, she figured she'd be slinging lattes for the rest of her life, so she shaved her head, moved into a VW bus and set off for Alaska. Valentine's Snafu Breakfast

Thursday, February, 14, 2008

bagel.jpgI’m not the kind of wife who expects much on Valentine’s Day after almost a decade of marriage – frankly, I was just ecstatic this morning to find that my husband had hung up his towel.

Not that my man is romantically retarded or anything; he just more likely to break it out at other times – flowers just because it’s Friday, shipping the kids off  to the grandparents midweek for a couple of hours and cooking us an adult meal, folding ALL the laundry... Who needs candy and a cheesy card from CVS when I’ve got Godiva and Gustav Klimt all year long?

So when he called me on my Blackberry this morning to wish me a Happy Valentine’s Day, I answered with a “Yeah, you too, love ya, bizzy bizzy today, mwah!” and hung up. He called back and said “Come downstairs to the reception desk, I’m in the parking lot of your office!”

Such a nice surprise, right? Except that I was not in my office but across town on my way to an interview with one of our April profiles! He sounded so sad when he said “But I have heart-shaped bagels for you and everything.”

Durnit! The one time he follows the V-Day crowd and I’m not even there to relish it. Aw well. Bagels and cream cheese sounds like a fine dinner for two...if they’re not stale by 5:30!

Fortunately for us, we still have other plans – we’re going to renew our vows at Tie the Knot on Tybee tonight, presided over by February’s He’s So Original Stephen Palmer. Sure, we’ll be freezing our patooties off on the Pier, but after a couple of glasses of pink champagne we’ll feel warm and young again, just like our honeymoon. Photos to come!
