I’ve only been a Southern woman for a year and a half now, but since experiencing the full-on immersion of the three-day Southern Women’s Show this weekend, I feel imminently more authentic. And I didn’t even have to drink any bourbon.
The Savannah Convention and Trade Center literally buzzed with excitement – vendors like Bobbie Brown make-up, White Lily Flour, Belk and lots and lots of others were giving away massive amounts of free stuff, and the people were here to collect! Women roamed the aisles with shopping bags scooping up whatever there was to be had – our Suzie called it “trick-or-treating for grown-ups.”
Of course we had plenty to give away (stickers, magnets, temporary tattoos, unsolicited fashion and love advice) at the skirt! booth.
That’s our sales director, Candice, and wait, is that a --

– baby bump?! Looks like there will be a junior skirt! scout around the office come late summer!
My husband’s androgyne mannequin modeled our shirts for sale and provided entertainment when things got slow. (FYI, her/his name is Bobby. And please do not ask why my husband has a mannequin – I’m not even really sure, but s/he’s been with us a long time. It usually does the Halloween duty of hanging from the porch and scaring the neighbors.)
Hundreds of women came by to pick up the February issue or just to chat and tell us how much they appreciate the magazine and what it stands for. I received lots of suggestions for He’s So Original (apparently, it’s every woman’s fantasy to get her husband into a skirt!)

The show had tons of attractions like $100 teeth whitening (wish I’d gotten a photo of the rows of people sitting in dentist’s chair with their teeth glowing under black lights) and free makeovers, but my personal favorite was the dog fashion show:

I think my little pug would look dee-vine in that argyle sweater! In fact, I spent more money on dog accessories at the show than I did on make-up, probably due to our booth’s placement caddy-corner to a women who sold canine accessories...
All in all, I had a blast with the my first Southern Women’s Show. Not only did I leave with tons of goodies, but I love any opportunity to hang out with the next generation of skirt! readers!
