Working 'Round the Clock

My mother likes to remind me that when she was a girl, the only respectable career options for a woman were secretary, teacher or nurse. While those occupations are definitely some of the most valuable around, I’m glad the circle of choices has expanded since then (and not just because my handwriting is illegible, six-hour stretches with my own two children exhaust me and I faint at the merest suggestion of blood.)

Gender no longer prevents us from becoming whatever we can imagine, and though the fight’s not over yet (women still earn 13 cents less on the dollar than men) more female entrepreneurs than ever – including the five women featured this month – have bashed through the glass ceiling to become their own bosses.

But even if you’re still toiling for The (Wo)Man or stuck in a job you’d rather shove, our “Around the Clock” issue is all about your day’s – or night’s - work. Now put down that Blackberry (or hammer or dishrag or stethoscope) and take a break already!
