Any Girl CAN Be President (And She's That Much Closer!)

Coinciding with Hillary’s win in last night’s New Hampshire primary is the announcement of the winners of our Any Little Girl Can Be President contest!

We received lots of compelling entries that discussed current issues like protecting the environment and ending the war in Iraq, but our winners took things to the next level with their originality and creativity. I know you’re eager to find out who they are, but first, as they say on TV, a word from our sponsors:

Pictured here are Dr. Lisa Semple and Cory Vaillancourt of the Semple Center for Women perusing all the entries along with their marvelously adorable daughter, Lulu.

skirt! wants to thank the Semple Center for Women for their support and incredible generosity on this project – as you will see, we had a tie for the 6th grade award, and Cory and Dr. Lisa donated an extra $250 prize to accomodate our fifth winner.

(Here’s a little secret about the Semple Center – they have fabulous spa services and are offering special free “flash” facials this month with their amazing new esthetician Haley. You have not known true relaxation until you have experienced her temple massage. You should check it out. For real.)

Anyway, without further ado, here is our list of winners and some quotes from their entries. Look for their photos and more in the February issue of skirt!

5th Grade

Catherine Campbell
HiltonHeadElementary School

“I would work on making school lunches better and give more money to the public schools…and most importantly, I would stop the war!”

6th Grade – IT’S A TIE!

Ashley Robinson
Homeschool
Song: “Let’s Make Some Noise” by Hannah Montana

“I would make it easier to recycle and make it more of our daily routine…also, I would make America a role model of peace for the rest of the world.”

Caitlin Robinson
Homeschool

“As president, I would try to do slow down pollution. [T]his problem can be solved by reducing the number of pollution-producing factories. One more thing I could change is the cruelty shown to some animals. They should be treated with more respect.”

7th grade
Caitlin Glasscock
Richmond HillMiddle School
Song: “We’re the Kids of the Future” by the Jonas Brothers

“I don’t believe it is bad to want to do important things as long as a person doesn’t get caught up in always needing to be right.

“When I get to be President I’ll always remember to show respect to my fellow Americans and to respect the right of individuals to exist as they really are, not in a social bubble that limits humanity by categorizing people by gender, race or beliefs. My greatest campaign issue will be to further all human rights by starting with rights of women at home in America.”

“I don’t want to be a cheerleader anymore – I want to carry the ball!”

“How about instead of “Red, White and Blue,” our country tries on “Pink, Enlightened and True”?

8th grade
Dana Boyd
ClaxtonMiddle School
Song: “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by Diana Ross

“I believe that America should begin to focus more on developing sciences because the more we know about the world around us, the better we can understand everything. Also, the healthcare situation in America at this time is desperately in need of change.”
